“Love You For A Long Time” is the first single released following Maggie Rogers' first major-label album, Heard It In A Past Life. The song was originally written the day before the hit song “Light On”. To no surprise, the song is about love. However, while the song describes a relationship with a particular person, Maggie has stated she hopes its message can have broader reach, saying: It’s a song about love in all its forms – romantic love, the love I feel for my friends, the love I feel for my band, and the love I’ve shared with all of you. The song leans more towards a folk or country sound, arguably a departure from the primarily folk-pop sound of Heard It in a Past Life. The instrumentation primarily features an acoustic guitar paired with a drum rhythm. Touches of piano and some twang from a steel guitar can also be heard in the background. Describing the sound in her own words, Maggie said: I wanted it to sound like the last days of summer. I wanted it to sound as wild and alive as new love feels.
